Where to eat in Paris

I’m not actually living in Paris, but Paris is like 1 hour and 15 minutes away from my hometown, Rouen. It is reachable by regular train, or nearly 2 hours by bus. I always said to my friends that, it’s like I’m living in a Parisian’s banlieue (read: suburb),  even closer. The advantage of having this regular train, it makes Rouen looks closer than living in Parisian suburb as this train is somehow faster than RER (Réseau express régional d’Île-de-France). Well, I often go to Paris, mostly for food :). Fortunately, I have wonderful friends that always ready to get me to try new things every time I came to visit. They know me so well that food is always come first than anything.

So, I would like to tell you some of fine address to eat while you’re in Paris.

First. Les enfants du marché

It is located inside Le marché des Enfants Rouges in 3rd arrondissement. If you like french food but you don’t want to go to a fancy-restaurant, Les enfants du marché will be your great choice. As it offers you a french bistro food, so the price is also a bit pricey, yet it is worth to try. I spent 35€ for a main course and a glass of wine.

The address: 39 rue de Bretagne, 750003 Paris

Opening hours:

Tue/Wed/Sun from 9 am to 5 pm and Thu/Fri/Sat from 9 am to 8 pm

Website: https://lesenfantsdumarche.fr/

Second. Impérial Choisy

This restaurant is one of the restaurant that I would come back every time I’m craving  chinesse food. This is actually one of the best chinesse food in Paris, located in china town. How do you know that? When you saw more Asian people than western people eating inside, it means it’s a real delicious one. They offer wide menus of chinesse dishes, but my favorite one is still le crab mou au sel et poivre (salt & pepper crab). Reservation is not necessary, but better come early as people is queuing outside even before it’s open.

Address: 32 Avenue de Choisy, 75013 Paris
Opening hours: Everyday, from 12 – 11 pm.

Third. Chez Justine

My friend told me that this place has the best pizza. Well, I approved. Second, they have a reasonable price for Paris.. I remember having a good cocktail for less than 5 €, that’s actually never happened when you’re in Paris. The place is actually quite popular for trendy crowd, so if you come in groups, I’m sure you will get the table.

img_2830.jpg

Address: 96 Rue Oberkampf, 75011 Paris
Opening hours: Weekdays from 8 am to 2 am and Weekend from 9 am to 2 am.

Fourth. SaAm

Fancy for korean bibimbab with reasonable price? This is good place to try. It is located in quite trendy area, Canal Saint-Martin. The place is quite small, but it is really worth to wait if you need to.

Address: 59Bis Rue de Lancry, 75010 Paris
Opening hours: from Tuesday to Saturday at lunch time and dinner time.

Fifth. Pho Tai

I’ve heard about this place has Michelin star. So, I was really excited and wondered at the same time how it would taste. Well, the Pho itself is really delicious and if you are into spicy food, you need to add the chillies sauce, it was so so good. Yet, the place need to be improved, the tables are too close to each other, we can’t get out the table without disturbing somebody sit next to you. This is the first michelin star restaurant I’ve been in without spending more than 20€ (including drinks) and without any reservation.

img_3280.jpg

Address: 13 Rue Philibert Lucot, 75013 Paris
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday at lunch time and dinner time

Finally, all the above are some of my recommendations if you have no idea where to eat while you’re in Paris. Will come back again with another new list for sure.. so, I say à très bientôt!

Rouen – Best address for foodies (part 2)

Hello, here I come again with the best address for foodies in the city where I live, Rouen. At least once a week, I have tried to pemper my self not to cook and enjoy the local food. To be honest it is also a privilege to live in France, where food is very important to the people. And, I am quite lucky living in Rouen, which lots of choices of food, not only in a restaurant, but also food market and even their franchise fast food tastes much better than it is in Indonesia.

First. Restaurant Philippe

It has been third time I came to this restaurant, and believe me you, I’ve never had the same menu each time. What I mean by menu is the restaurant always have different choices in everything every season, even the desserts. So, I can’t give you any recommendation of which food to try, as they basically have different one every-time. But, no worries, I can assure you that I’d never disappointed and always came home with a happy tummy. It’s better to have reservation if you are a late evening eater. I came there around 7 pm, and they let me in without any reservation.

The address: 4 Rue aux Ours, 76000 Rouen Ph. +332 35 71 36 10

Open for lunch during weekdays
Open for lunch and dinner on Friday - Saturday

Second. Noodle Shop

I accidentally passed by this Noodle Shop to get to the parking lot after having dinner in the other noodle restaurant nearby. So, I have had a look on their menu on the street, and it looked really interesting. They offer different kind of noodle than the other chinese noodle restaurant nearby. You can have not only japanese noodle (such as: ramen and yakisoba), chinese noodle, chicken teriyaki, and korean burger (bao). Well, if you have the chance to come here, I would recommend you to try their Yakisoba.

The address: 172 Rue Eau de Robec, 76000 Rouen
Ph. +332 32 83 09 14

Open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday - Saturday

Third. Le Deli cat

This one is quite particular. I believe you’ve heard about cafe in Paris for cats lover. So, we also have one in Rouen, it’s a small brunch / tea-shop where you can meet lots of adopted cats arround playing in their cat playground while you’re having brunch or having a tea time in the afternoon. I am personally not a cat person, but if you’re in first date or something, I would imagine this one is the best place to go to. I’m sure with having cats arround would make you feel less nervous and start making silly conversation.

I went there on Saturday arround 10/11 in the morning, so I’ve order a menu for only 15€ with orange juice/ hot drink/cold / salmon cake and salads / a very good dessert from the best patissery in town “Christophe Cressent” (Meilleur ouvrier de France). The salmon cake and salads are really good, it was homemade cook. The owner is also really nice and humble.

The address: 70 Rue Cauchoise, 76000 Rouen Ph. +332 35 03 89 57

Fourth. Pizza Drugstore

Unless I found another better pizza in town, Pizza Drugstore is so far the best place where you can eat the best pizza in Rouen. The place itself quite unique, the restaurant was an old wine cave. So, please note that you can’t have any connection downstairs, it means you will concentrate enjoying your food and having discussion. Unlike another pizza place, where you can order via Deliveroo or Ubereats, you can’t get their pizza unless you go in there. Make sure you have your reservation or go there to have early dinner. The perks of having pizza here is that you can have half pizza and half salads, so at the end you will have more space in your tummy to taste their tiramisu.

The address: 2 Rue Beauvoisine, 76000 Rouen Ph. +339 82 33 43 18

Fifth. Gill côté Bistro

This one is quite chic bistro situated in the tourist area “place du vieux marché” owned by Gilles Tournadre. He has several restaurants in Rouen, one of them is 2 stars Michelin located near the River Seine. You will absolutely enjoy good dining or lunch with more likely reasonable price. The staff are friendly and they will let you have a seat even without reservation as long as they still have place available.

Here’s some quote in French from Michelin inspector about this bistro..

Rouen – best address for foodies

Living here for almost 2 years now, I think I need to share you my favorite places to eat in Rouen, all the places mentioned below were tested personally:

Poppy’s Fish & Chips 21 Rue Cauchoise, 76000 Rouen

website

poppy's
copyright: Léonie STEVENS

This takeaway restaurant just opened in 2017, and they serve authentic english fish & chips with mashy peas and tartare sauce. Apparently the owner had spent couple years in England and worked at the English pub, I think that’s the reason why they know how to cook a proper fish & chips. If you don’t really like fishes, they also have fried chicken & chips, and it tastes amazing.

Le Comptoir des Halles – Place du Vieux Marché, 76000 Rouen

website

comptoir des halles

This place is one of my favorite place to eat fresh oyster without going to a fancy restaurant. We also call the place “bar a huitres”, which literally means “oyster bar”. It is located inside the Vieux Marché, so it is very easy to find. I used to come here after rush hour, so the place was less busy and I can enjoy my oyster and a glass of white wine quitely.

Despite having seafood platter, you can also have lunch there, they have different kind of fish / seafood hot dishes, it all depends on what available on the season.

Hot dog Corner Rouen – 8 rue Croix Verte, 76000 Rouen

website

hotdog

Funny things, I found this hot dog shop by mistake when I was at Kebab shop nearby. My favorite menu is the classic American with mustard and fried shallots. What make the hot dog tastes amazing is because the owner makes the bun by herself. Not only the hot dog, you need to taste their milkshakes.  You can decide whether to eat your hot dog on the spot, in the restaurant, or take your menu home with you.

Ho Lamian – 243 Rue Eau de Robec, 76000 Rouen

website

ho lamian

If you want to eat homemade hand-drown chinesse noodles, this is the best place in town. Price is affordable for a good quality.

Le Pied de Poule – 16 Rue Victor Hugo, 76000 Rouen

pied de poule.JPG

It is not very well located but finally I found not very fancy french restaurant in Rouen. Don’t be surprise if it looks pretty quite from the outside, I think it is simply because it is not located in popular area in Rouen. Yet, the food was delicious, the price was affordable, the decoration is also fine. I ordered the foie gras for starter, then mussels and chips for maincourse.

A fancy trip to Lille

Had been lived in Lille for a year, makes me always feel that this city is my second home. Lille is a pretty big city in the north of France, situated near France and Belgium border. When I was living in south of France, people asked me why I want to move to the north when you have sun almost everyday in the south, and they said Northern people is always sad, which is I can prove you that it is definitely not true.

I’ve been moving to several cities in different regions in France, and Lille is still my favorite one. Lille so far has the most humble and warmest people and neighborhood I have ever lived in. Even everyday is a grey sky, but you can always having fun and meet nice people.

I regularly visit this city even I do not live there anymore, so I’m going to give you some travel tips if you want to enjoy your weekend in Lille.

First, where to stay:

If you want to enjoy five-stars hotel facilities and have a historical visit at the same time Hotel l’Hermitage Gantois-Autograph Collection is the best one in the city. The hotel was established in a historical monument from the 15th century and is an exceptional mix between ancient architecture and modern design. The Hermitage Gantois, a special place to relax surrounded by history and modernity. Each room has its own personality which will make your stay a unique experience (read more & make a reservation).  Tips: Don’t forget to bring your swim suit because they have swimming pool & spa service. What I love: their very huge bar and their gastronomic restaurant.

Second, having a tea time at Méert:

A voyage to the best pastry and chocolates shops in town. The history of Méert begins in 1761, when Mr. Delcourt settles Sweets Chocolatier in Lille, at 27 Esquermoise street address where we find traces of a confectionery since 1661. It will soon be followed by his compatriot Modo Rollez who with his artist friends, the architect Alexandre Alphonse Benvignat and Leroy, give instead the face we know today, an incredible Pompeian style décor and orientalist flamboyant, rich and talented Stalars Huidiez, painter and sculptor registered in the period.

The Belgian Michael Paulus Gislinus Méert took over the business after five years in the settlements in the cocoa plantations, sugar cane, vanilla and coffee. also a course rich in the largest confectionery manufacturers in Europe, it develops the already numerous pastry sweets and creates fabulous waffle filled with vanilla, finally leaving its name to the famous house.

Given the success, the first tea room “Family Teapure neo Louis XVI style and work of architect Cordonnier was inaugurated, followed quickly by a second art deco lounge and a new store in the years 1930. at the turn of the twenty-first century, all the seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings, which housed the workshops are transformed into reception room, leading to the place we know today. Must to try: Méert waffle. Tips: Be patient while queueing, it’s worth it!

Third, best cocktail bar in town:

le-dandy-1

When you have time to spend a night in Lille, you must visit Le Dandy cocktail’s bar and of course try some of their drinks, they serve original cocktails that you hardly find anywhere else. It is located in the famous quartier in Lille, le vieux Lille If you’re not fancy to drink alcohol, don’t worry! They also have some delicious cocktail’s without alcohol. Tips: Try to reserve a place during the weekend.

Fourth, where to eat:

This one is pretty difficult, it depends what type of food you are in the mood is, but don’t worry I will give you some reference of some different restaurants in Lille.

The best Italian cuisine restaurant:La Bottega, I’ve never disappointed every time I went to this Italian restaurant, they have proper Italian pizza and very good tiramisu.

la_bottega_lille_59__1____jean-charles_gesquiere___cie_basdef

The best Japanese cuisine: Jomon-negishi

It is sometimes very hard to find a Japanese restaurant owned and prepared by a proper Japanese chef in Europe. What you can find is quick sushi or a Chinese restaurant who served Japanese food. But in Jomon, Lille, you can find not only sushi but also bento menu with tempura, a proper and delicious tempura.

French Gastronomic: Au Goût du Jour restaurant

To be honest, I haven’t try all gastronomic restaurants in Lille, well they have numbers of them. But, this one is one of the best in town. What makes different with other gastronomic restaurants in Lille, Au Goût du Jour will serve you their special menu “les yeux fermés” (read: eye closed). The chef will give you a surprise menu (starter, main dish, dessert) and of course they will ask you first something you cannot eat and you don’t like.

You can visit all historical buildings in Lille by walking distance: The famous Grand Place, Vielle Bourse just on the right, Chambre de commerce, le quartier Vieux Lille, Musée de Beaux-Arts.
